"Last Goodbye" is a song recorded by Miley Cyrus for the album  Bangerz.

Background[]

Little is known about the song. The writers and producer(s) are unknown, but some fans speculate the song was produced by long-time collaborator Mike WiLL Made it. The song more than likely recorded in either 2012 or 2013. Snippets of the song first leaked in June 2013 then one year later, a full version surprisingly leaked on the internet.

Composition[]

"Last Goodbye" is an Electronica and R&B song, that relies on a back-and-forth electronica-influenced, morbid synth that acts as the bubbly hold for the song, while it holds a thick bass that has a 2-step beat, tin claps, 'wooshes' that immitate Electronic Dance Music, 808 trap snares and quirky glitches. The escalation of the song during the pre-hook may cause many to think a dance-breakdown would come, but it reverts back the Electronica-R&B tone. Miley stays within a mid-range Contralto range. On the verses, she sings in a mostly hushed, emotive vocal tone, while her build-up show more force and insinuate anger, while her hook shows her immulating a yodeling-like vocal run. Due to probably not being professionally mixed, it has somewhat of a pixelated sound to it.

Critical Reception and Interest[]

"Last Goodbye" receieved generally positive reviews from Celebrity Blogs and some critics, with most noting the nature of the lyrics, and some praise going to Cyrus' vocals. Emily Longeretta of Hollywood Life wrote; "We’re so glad this full song came out. When she released a snippet last year, sources claimed the song was about the passing of her dog, Lila. However, now that the full song is out as well as the lyrics, it’s hard to believe that is true." It’s actually almost impossible — it’s clearly about a relationship. [1] While Nidhi Tewari of International Business Times found the song a "catchy number, which if included in her album, would have been a hit."[2]

Lyrics[]

[Intro]
Mmmm, yeah
Goodbye

[Verse 1]
We never said that we would be perfect
We only said that we'd try
And when you said that we were forever
I guess it's just another lie
Let me slip right through your fingers
I hope you know it's real this time, yeah
You know that I said I'd never come home for a last goodbye, yeah

[Chorus]
I don’t wanna let you go if you still love me
'Cause I don’t wanna see you cry, yeah
But it feels like you and I are dying
And there’s no one that can save our lives, yeah
And I know we're sick and tired of fighting
Sick and tired of being sick and tired, yeah
But I know that you're gonna want me to come home for a last goodbye

[Post-Chorus]
Oh-oh-oh-oh-oh, aye
Bye-ye-ye, oh-oh-oh-oh-oh

[Verse 2]
Laying in the dark with you against me
I can't even open my eyes
'Cause the pain has outweighed the pleasure
Don't think I can take another night
How has my best friend become such a stranger?
It seemed like everything was fine
We've already been through this twice
And I'm never coming home for a last goodbye

[Breakdown]
Oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh-oh-oh, yeah
Oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh-oh-oh, yeah

[Outro]
You let me down
I gave you up
I took you back
I guess I can't blame ya for this when I told myself
I’ll never say that last goodbye
I'll never say...
That last goodbye
